Detuned/Stillness is the most recent of three poems by Jim Dening that I set to music. For this poem, I decided to use my previously composed piano solo Stillness for the musical background with the vocal part spoken above. This poem may be performed in either French or English. It is usually sung as part of a triptych consisting of Pebbles, Debris; Le Cerisier and Detuned/Stillness. I was immediately attracted to the imagery and almost surrealistic nature of this poem and immediately thought that my piano solo, Stillness, was the perfect music to combine with the text. Heres how the author explains the manner in which the text should be read. "The text is to be read in a normal conversational tone", The poet has explained: "The text is meant to convey the half-dreamed ideas and impressions which come up when you stop searching frontally for words and phrases". The duration is 4'50.
