Product Description

This is Sojourner, my latest piece for piano and strings that premiered at the 2024 United Nations Gala at Carnegie Hall and won 1st place in Massachusetts for the MTNA Composition Competition. It all started with a simple exercise: take 4 random notes, and make a small composition out of just those notes. From there, I developed the melody of the first several measures of the piece, but with enough time I decided to take off the restriction and... well now I have a nearly 8-minute piece, flitting between vocal-like arias and motoric ostinatos and everything in between.
I had a few influences in mind in the course of writing, namely Tigran Hamasyan, Takashi Yoshimatsu, and Joe Hisaishi, especially his score for Princess Mononoke. Listen closely; you may hear a bit of Mononoke in the intro.
I want to thank my composition teachers Sarah Takagi and David Ibbett for guiding my creative process and making sure I relied on using pen, paper, and my inner ear more than whatever any music notation software could generate---the result was a piece where I truly expressed my own inner voice, and I think it shows. I hope you enjoy the music! Critique is fully welcome.
