Rankin was a 19th century minister, abolitionist, and hymnist from New Hampshire. Tomer was a Civil War veteran, teacher, and hymnist from New Jersey. This is a benediction hymn. Section A and C are the verse. Sections B and D are the chorus. A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of section B with the help of a French augmented sixth chord. A descant by yours truly is then added in section C. The work finally ends with a plagal cadence. This work should be played with tenderness, reverence, and sincerity.
