"Journey To The Past" - From the Broadway Musical - "Anastasia" (Soprano Cornet Solo)
Music: Stephen Flaherty
Lyrics: Lynn Ahrens
Brass Band Arrangement: Mark Harrison
------------
Anastasia first came into existence in 1997, with the 20th Century Fox Animation film, but it wasnt until 2017 that it first had its debut on the stage on Broadway. The stage show featured 16 new numbers by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, as well as 6 songs that came straight from the film.
Journey To The Past appears near the beginning of the animated film, but is reworked to be the Act 1 finale for the stage. The main character, Anya, travelling with her companions Vlad and Dmitry, finally arrives in France, and is heading to Paris in search of answers. She summons the courage to continue on, with the hope that she will finally discover who she truly is, and sings this show-stopping number.
Since there is snow in the movie, and of course, sleigh bells, Im confident in saying that this can easily be programmed into any Christmas period concert, and indeed all year round.
Whilst not technically demanding, high stamina and restraint is required by the performer to get through to the end, with an optional 8 bar tacet after the bridge. If going for the top C at the end (Oh, please do!) then the penultimate long G doesnt have to be held to its entire length.
The band should take care not to overpower the soloist and take pleasure in the rise and fall of dynamics. I appear to have written a Glockenspiel concerto with this arrangement, so enjoy tinkling away!
I have provided a Soprano Cornet Part that doubles Solo Cornet 1, in case any band wishes to have a vocalist sing this solo (vocal part also included)
