The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto (Liang Zhu ) is a beloved concerto that features traditional Chinese folk tunes written in the Western orchestral idiom. This rendition has taken the main tune from the first movement and abridged it to fit into a short 5 minute stand alone piece.
This arrangement is for 2 advanced solo violinists, optional guzheng, harp, or piano, and an intermediate student string orchestra. The 2 solo violin parts here are symbolic of Zhu Yingtai (), the story's protagonist, and of Liang Shanbo (), her lover. The first movement describes Zhus road to Hangzhou for her studies. As a young woman she is forbidden to attend school so she becomes disguised as a man. She meets Liang for the first time and their passionate journey begins, first as a sweet friendship and then finally as a tragic, forbidden love.
