Schubert's "Ave Maria" is one of his most cherished and financially successful works. Although not initially intended for liturgical purposes, it has found tremendous acceptance and popularity among Roman Catholics, particularly in Latin. The melody's brilliance and ingenious composition have captivated listeners, as evidenced by Schubert's statement to his father. Despite its widespread use as a prayer, Schubert's "Ave Maria" was not written with religious practices or the Catholic church in mind.

Schubert's "Ave Maria" has been widely used in popular culture. It is often performed and recorded by many singers under the title "Ave Maria" in musically simplified arrangements and with various lyrics that commonly differ from the original context of the poem. The melody has been used in the film Fantasia and has appeared in TV shows from Supernatural to Community to Bob's Burgers. It was also performed at John F. Kennedy's funeral and has been used in the soundtrack of The Batman.
