Product Description

Rebecca Clarke (1886 1979) was a British-American classical composer and viola virtuoso; she spent substantial periods of her life in the United States, where she permanently settled after World War II. She was born in Harrow and studied at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music in London. At the outbreak of World War II, Clarke was in the US visiting her two brothers, and was unable to obtain a visa to return to Britain. She lived for a while with her brothers' families and then in 1942 took a position as a governess for a family in Connecticut. She composed 10 works between 1939 and 1942, including 'Passacaglia on an Old English Tune' (based on a theme by Thomas Tallis) for viola and piano, which she dedicated to 'BB' (originally thought to be a family member, but later attributed to Benjamin Britten). Arranged to expand the repertoire for concert band of music by pioneering women composers.

This product was created by a member of ArrangeMe, Hal Leonard's global self-publishing community of independent composers, arrangers, and songwriters. ArrangeMe allows for the publication of unique arrangements of both popular titles and original compositions from a wide variety of voices and backgrounds.
