Portrait was composed in August 2004 as a gift for Adolf Sobrevilla, to whom it is dedicated. As the title suggests, this work is a musical portraitan attempt to capture the essence of a person not through physical description, but through emotional expression. The composition has undergone significant evolution since its inception. Originally scored for string orchestra and piano, I found myself continually revisiting and revising the work, never quite satisfied with this initial orchestration. In 2016, recognizing that the demanding virtuosity required of the string parts would be better served by a more intimate setting, I rescored the piece for a solo string quintet with piano. The work reached its final form in 2022, when I rewrote it as a piano quinteta more standard chamber music formation that allows the music's emotional content to shine through with greater clarity and balance.
