Milton Williams has performed internationally as a Conductor, Baritone Soloist, and Narrator. He appeared in solo and orchestral performances in Western, Southern, Central, and Eastern Europe, Canada, Bermuda, and throughout the United States. He served as music director and conductor for orchestral, choral, and operatic ensembles; his repertoire ranging from opera and oratorio to symphonic, jazz, blues, and contemporary art music.
Williams was the Associate Conductor for the production of Leonard Bernstein’s theatre piece "MASS," at Vatican City, Rome, for Pope John Paul II’s Jubilee Celebrations. In August of the same year, he was the Chorus Master and Vocal Coach for the Cabrillo Music Festival’s presentation of Aaron Copland’s opera "The Tender Land." He also performed a lead role in both productions. He served as Rehearsal Conductor, for the Cabrillo Music Festival of Contemporary Music for nine seasons, with Conductors Denis Russell Davies, and Marin Alsop.
His prior conducting assignments include the University of California at Berkeley Student Division of Vocal Music (Director, and Principal Conductor), Street Corner Opera Company (Music Director and Conductor), Solisti Singers and The Solisti Theater Arts Orchestra (Music Director and Conductor), the Notre Dame de Namur University Orchestra (Conductor), the Peninsula Youth Orchestra, Burlingame, CA (Conductor), the Contra Costa Chorale, the Stockton Chorale, and more. He was an Assistant Conducting with the Oakland Symphony Orchestra, Harold Farberman, Music Director.
Williams conducted the California premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s "MASS," at University of California Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall with the Oakland Symphony, and the premiere of his own theater oratorio "Espying" at the Banff Festival of Fine Arts, with Norbert Vesak as Director and Choreographer for both productions. In Canada, he served as Head of the Choral Division, and Conductor of the Professional Orchestra for the Banff Festival of Fine Arts. He has guest conducted orchestral ensembles, including the San Francisco Symphony Pops Orchestra with the San Francisco Civic chorale.
In addition to his work at University of California at Berkeley, he taught at Stanford University, California State University East Bay, Notre Dame de Namur University, the Banff Festival Musical Theatre Division, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. His own private instructors and coaches included: Julius Huehn, Arthur Kraft, Donald Stenberg, Ethel Hardy Smith, Denis de Coteau, Darius Milhaud, Adolf Baller, Ludwig Altman, Loren Rush, Adelaide Mary Brown, and William L. Dawson.
Williams’ compositions also include "A Bridge To The Promised Land: 1968” (a New Masque, for Extended Theater), “Fanfare for a New Century” for Brass Septet (premiered at the Cabrillo Festival for Contemporary Music), and “I Hear an Army” (for Chorus - SSAATTBB, 2 pianos, cello, Bass, & tuba).
