Sweney was a musician, band director, Civil War veteran, professor, and hymnist of the 19th Century. Crosby was the famous blind American poet, teacher, and hymnist in the 19th Century. Sections A and C are the verse. Section B and D are the refrain. A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of B section with the help of a French augmented sixth chord. Section C then introduces a descant by yours truly.
