Product Description

Haydn's original for string quartet has been arranged for woodwind quintet. Known as the "Sunrise" because the rising opening theme of the first movement  seems to depict the first appearance of the sun at dawn. Whether Haydn intended it or not, this movement has caught the imagination of many listeners as some of the earliest programme music (rather in the manner of Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata for piano a few years later). The Adagio, Menuetto & Trio, and Finale follow a more traditional pattern but, as ever, Haydn's ingenuity produces small innovations such as the triplet semi quavers/ sixteenth notes which become sextuplets in the Adagio, the unusual contrasting Trio and the acceleration of the final section of the Finale.

Players of Advanced intermediate standard and above will enjoy the challenge of this delightful Piece.
