McAfee was a 19th Century pastor, hymnist, and professor from Missouri. He wrote this song as comfort in light of experiencing personal tragedies in his family due to illnesses. This piece should be played sweetly [Dolce]. Sections A and C are the verse. Section B and D are the refrain. A modulation to a new key occurs at the end of section B with the help of an Italian augmented sixth chord. A descant by yours truly is then added.
