Product Description
Airborne, composed in 1999, was originally inspired by the illustration The Dinky-Bird by Maxfield Parrish, a print of which hung on the wall of my childhood home. The drawing was one of several included in Parrishs illustrations from the 1904 Scribner and Sons Poems of Childhood, and was itself based on the Eugene Field poem "The Dinkey-Bird." The piece is a deliberate attempt to write in a lighter, freer, more audience-accessible style, while capturing both the motion and the child-like wonder of the image. It is also an exploration of timbre, using a combination of instruments (flute, clarinet, marimba) I had not used together before.
The piece is approximately 7 1/2 minutes long. Parts are included for the flute and clarinet. The marimba plays from score. The performers in the sound clip are Sue Kurian, flute; Robert D'Ambrosio, clarinet; and Cheryl Wiener, marimba.
