The composer wrote Waves specifically for the piano pupils Haberdashers Askes College in London, where he is the piano teacher since 2010. It has been written bearing in mind the interest, musical taste and capabilities of nowadays teenager and adult piano beginners.

It is an ideal piece to first understand how the sustain pedal works and to master it so this skill can be applied into any other piece of the piano repertoire. An ostinato in the left hand while a melody is played by the right hand gives the pianist a chance to improve his coordination skills easily. In addition, the area where both hands sit in the keyboard introduce a challenging position around the black keys which will build a useful and solid posture in the hands of the pianist should more advanced repertoire is learned in the future.
