'Hiraeth' is a Welsh word and it is a word that has a special meaning to Welsh people. It roughly translates into a kind of yearning or longing for home, a form of home sickness so to speak. Hence this solo is a ballad for euphonium and the long lyrical melodic lines are designed to pull at the heart strings as the performer and listener yearns for their homeland.
