Product Description

St. Catherine is an English Country Dance tune that made its first appearance in the 11th edition of Playford's Dancing Master, which was published in 1701. The structure is AA'BB'; the repeats are written out. I've arranged this tune as a duo and added slight melodic/octave alterations, which is common performance practice for this dance music when themes are repeated. The restatement of the B theme is in the second part, beginning an octave higher. St. Catherine can be played on two violins or flute (recorder) and violin. In the audio sample provided here, it is performed on soprano recorder (which sounds an octave higher than written) and violin. St. Catherine makes a beautiful and unique wedding processional and could combine effectively with other music from the Romantic Playford series. St. Catherine will be enjoyed by the student seeking an interesting recital piece that is not out of reach for the young violinist.
