Product Description

Organizer, promoter, composer and conductor James Reese Europe, called by Eubie Blake the "Martin Luther King of Music, was the leading figure in the African-American music scene of New York City in the 1910s. Europe composed the spirited Clef Club March as the signature theme for his 125 member Clef Club orchestra that performed at Carnegie Hall from 1912 to 1915. During World War I, Europe directed the 369th Infantry Regiment "Harlem Hellfighters" Band to great acclaim in performances throughout France. Arranged for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon, the historically important work has audience appeal and is accessible for less experienced performers. The recording is of the entire edition.

To see our Music of Black Composers Series for woodwinds enter Black Composers Series Woodwinds in the search box at Charles Decker Music Press for arrangements for mixed woodwind ensembles with composers Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, R. Nathaniel Dett, Will Marion Cook, James Reese Europe, James Johnson and others.
