Product Description

As with our previous publications, Chording to the Dance Masters, Chording to the Consort and Ten Christmas Carols 1350-1610, Wold Meridian remains committed to spreading our enthusiasm for Early Music.

Harmony of The Middle Ages takes our catalogue back to the 12th century with 22 pieces featuring the beginnings of music composed in two and three parts.  A good number of pieces are from anonymous sources that have been preserved in important and beautiful manuscripts, but there are also works by Adam de La Halle, Guillaume de Machaut and Francesco Landini.

These pieces are for singers (all lyrics have been provided) and instrumentalists of many different kinds, whether it be with modern recorders, harps , flutes, guitars, mandolins and the like, or for those fortunate enough to have access to reproductions of mediaeval instruments (vielles, gitterns, citoles, lutes, rebecs, portative organs, shawms to name but a few).

There are background notes to all the sources and composers and musical and historical features, as well as translations of the lyrics.

While the pieces are technically quite easy, in limited ranges and never straying far from the home keys, the rhythms and harmonies may at first seem unusual to those not familiar with these pieces, and this otherness is what gives music of this time particular charm.  As a help to becoming familiar with these melodies  each of the 22 pieces is featured in a YouTube playlist with artwork from the times of the pieces and historical notes.
