Hoodoos 1, for Alto Flute and Bassoon
Facing Tunnel Mountain Across the Bow River

Instrumentation: Alto Flute, Bassoon
Duration: 4 minutes 45 seconds

Hoodoos 1 draws on the experience of walking in the morning along the Hoodoos Trail near Tunnel Mountain Campground in Banff National Park, and seeing the Bow River valley brighten as the sun climbs past the peaks of the mountains to the east. By using the unconventional combination of alto flute and bassoon, Hoodoos 1 seeks to create impressions of the color, space, and magnitude of the vista, while it expands the chamber music repertoire for those instruments.

This work is a suitable chamber work for advanced players. It features some extended techniques including pitch bending, sliding, and quarter-tones in both instrumental parts, and a percussive effect in the bassoon part.

Hoodoos 1 received an Honorable Mention in the 2020 International Duo Symposium Composition Contest.

Composed by Scott Miller, 2019
Recorded 2019 by Charmaine Bacon, alto flute and Scott Miller, bassoon
