'Walk Between The Raindrops' is the closing track on Donald Fagen's first post-Steely Dan solo album The Nightfly, from 1982. An uptempo shuffle, this tune features walking bass (supplied in this arrangement by the cello) with synth brass comps on the offbeats throughout (covered by the viola). The first violin part covers the lead vocal, while the second violin covers the clever and intricate guitar and organ fills heard on the recording. The second violinist also covers the playful organ solo, during which the first violin shifts over to covering guitar fills briefly. The lyrics of this song evoke a walk along South Beach past Art Deco hotels and so, as in the original recording, at the break between the first verse and solo the quartet shouts "Miami!"
While none of the individual parts are particularly demanding, the ensemble work will require that all players have a very good shuffle feel, with very consistent pocket rhythm playing from the violist and cellist. It's a short tune, clocking in at under 2 minutes 30 seconds, but it's a highly energetic crowd-pleaser and would make a great encore number, or fit well in a set list alongside other jazz standards.
